That Damn Cat

Sadie is hiding now in your closet
with her claws, ready and set
to demolish your grey mohair sweater.
Since you left she seems a little sweeter,
I never cared for cats, especially calicoes
but I like the way she is now destroying your clothes.

Yesterday, I picked up our special takeout order
from our regular Chinese place on the corner.
Old habits keep me lonely and trapped
but I don't think I want you back.

Sadie has ripped the mohair to sheds
now she is working on the posts of our bed.
She has completely stopped eating anything
except the fresh shrimp you keep bringing.

After you leave she mopes for hours
hiding under our frayed bed covers.
I spread the bed with your newly shredded jacket
so Sadie will sleep beside me on her blanket.

I know you want to come home
I can hear, "please forgive me", in your tone.
I really don't know what to do,
but that damn cat really misses you.
